Notes for My Future Husband
(whom ever that maybe)
On days like today [::cough:: commercialized holidays constructed to sell the idea of love ::cough::] I look around me and see all the things that I Do Not want my future husband or boyfriend to be. So I thought, while I’m making a list of all the things I Don’t want, I should probably let the universe also know some of the things I Do want.
1) Future husband or lover, you will probably wear something like this

2) You too believe that the perfect Sunday morning looks something like this

3) You’re down with listening to records in our living room and doing a lot of this

4) In four to five years, you wouldn’t mind if this was you at Sonic Youth concert

If any or all of this sounds good, please apply as soon as possible. For all others on this Valentine’s Day, leave the flowers, cheesy balloons and candies at home. I’d be much more impressed if your boyfriend bought you an interesting book.
What’s Your Super Bionic Power?

The other night we were playing the Super Bionic Power game. You can learn a lot through the Super Bionic Power game. The game, on its surface, seems simple. Answer the question, “What would your Super Bionic Power be?” For me the answer has always been simple, Telepathy (i.e. to read people’s mind). Here’s the trick, all Super Bionic Powers come with some inherent weakness.
I’ll use X-Men as an example, since I based this game on them first place. Rogue absorbs the essence of everyone she touches. So her greatest weakness is her inherent understanding and empathy of all those around her. While she can be psychologically close, she will forever be physically removed. Wolverine has the ability to heal at an alarming rate. While physically he seems indestructible, we know that internally he feels pain very deeply—both physically and mentally—and has great difficulty recovering from that.
Now you know the origins, you can understand the revealing nature of the game. Telepathy indicates that my greatest weakness has something to do with my own vision of intelligence and perverse need to know everything and be one step ahead of everyone. It also revealed a real lack of humility.
That night there was new girl in our group of friends, a pretty blond whom I had erroneously judged as flighty. When the question came to her, with out hesitation she revealed her Super Bionic Power would be to heal the wounds of others. I was struck by this immediately. In this moment she revealed her weakness as generosity. All she wants to do in life is give of herself and help others, possibly to her own detriment.
I was impressed and humbled by her choice and will forever see her in a different light because of it. See, the Super Bionic Power game is dangerous. I has the ability to change things. So, what would your Super Bionic Power be?

Equally as compelling might have been Martin Sheen as President Snow, but that’s an entirely different post.
